State Testing
State testing is separate from our own K12 testing. K12 testing, like Scantron and CIA in Study Island are done virtually. State testing is done in person with UTVA teachers proctoring the test.
We will have several tests that we will be doing in the winter and spring: DWA and SAGE (formerly CRT).
State testing is required for all Utah students. Since UTVA is a public school and has to follow state rules, it is required to test all of UTVA students.
As a virtual school that has students allover the state, we are doing State Testing on different dates in different locations throughout the state. Each student will be assigned to a specific date to come and do the testing in person at a location near your residence. We try to do it in most central locations, but in some remote areas it might not be possible. With so many students scattered all over the state, it takes a lot of time, teachers, money, and computers to coordinate this allover the state, and make it as convenient and close to you as possible. So please make everything you can to come on the dates and times assigned to you. We schedule and rent a place at a library, school, college, or convention center for a certain times and dates We don't have an option for you to choose the dates. So please plan to be for the testing at the assigned to you date and time. In very extreme hardship circumstances we can re-assign you to a make up date, but in some location we don't have make up dates.
You will get an invitation from out testing coordinator ahead of time for the testing, so please RSVP promptly and put it on your calendar and plan to be there. Please let me, your mentor, know right away if you have hardship circumstances that don't allow you to be there and if there is a make up date available. I will try everything I can to help you out. This testing might take place of your work samples for that month, we will let you know for sure, so you don't want to lose 30% of your grade by missing the work samples. Please plan to be there.
DWA
Direct Writing Assessment for 8th and 5th graders

This year 8th graders will write Argumentative Essay. Use Utah Write website for practice. JANUARY OUTING
Check the Outings Tab. We will go to the Clark Planetarium on January 24, it is this coming Friday. Please RSVP if you are coming.
Science Fair
January 31. See Kmail from your science teacher or see her in Science class connect for details.
Upcoming Outings:
February
Watch for the updates. We are still working on February outing. We might be able to go to the new Aquarium. We are still working on it to see if it is possible to get a discount for students. We will let you know in Kmail and Lynx to Learning Class. Another option is a middle school/high school dance in Feb or March. Let me know if you are interested in that and send me a Kmail or fill out the interest survey for the dance.
March
Mark your calendar for March 6th. We are going to the Capitol. The whole school, like last year. It is a very fun outing. I love the Capitol. We are doing it early in March because that is when we can get in when Legislature is in session. We want you to see our state government in action and it's very fun. The legislature ends it's session in the second week of March. Hopefully we will be able to go into the Senate and the House of Representatives and see a debate or them voting. You can wave to your senator or representative if you know who they are. Check the state government or your county webpages to see who they are by your address. It's actually lots of fun to see them and you can even send them a note and meet him/her if you want. I am soooo looking forward to this outing.

Class Connects.
What to do if you missed a class connect that you really wanted to attend
If you missed a Class Connect session you can always watch it in recording.
Just go to your daily plan, scroll back to the day you want and you can see all the classes and all class connects. Click on a class connect, a pop up window opens up, and if there is a recording, you can click on it and watch it. Sometimes teachers don't post the recording right away, so give it some time if it's not available yet. Sometimes there is a problem with posting a recording, so just shoot a Kmail to a teacher you need and ask him/her about it. Hope this helps. Study Halls or other non instructional classes are never recorded.

Science materials for your science class: Where to find them
Hey students and learning coaches,
As I have been meeting with many of you over the last week or so, I have been asked a question about science materials a lot. So here is information about science materials that your science teacher sent to you and gave to me as well. It might answer your questions on science materials.
There is no student guide/textbook for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade science classes. The only thing you should have received in the mail from K12 is your lab supplies. All the student guides and off-line papers can be found on-line in the OLS in 2 places: 1. On the 1st page of each lesson, in the bottom right hand corner, there is a button "Lesson Resources" click on that, and then click on "Materials".
OR
2. In the science course, click on a Unit, then you should see 4 tabs: a list of the lessons for that unit, Materials tab, Objectives, etc. Click on the "Materials" tab and you will see all the off-line papers for the WHOLE Unit. You can refer to these papers on-line, or print them off.
Thanks!

IT'S ILP TIME
What is ILP anyway? ILP is an Individualized Learning Plan we create for and with each student for the academic year. It has information about you, your interests for example, also academic goals and progress, personal and social goals that you want to accomplish this year or in the future in general, if you keep the big picture in mind. It is first started by your mentor, and then your subject teachers add academic information and talk with you about it as well. It can be completed over the phone, video conference (virtually in BbC=class connect or in Skype), or in person what we call "face to face". So I hope you will pick up the phone and talk to me when I call you about it. I am not scary, I promise. And it won't take too long. But it will be worth it. Really!

LESSONS BEING SKIPPED IN OLS
Just a reminder. You will notice that some lessons in your courses have been skipped. That is happening because your teachers have gone in and aligned what is in the k12 curriculum and what is in the state core and you aren't required to do the skipped lessons.

SCANTRON
Do you still need to take the Scantron tests? This is just a friendly reminder to hurry and get them done. The sooner you complete them, the sooner I’ll stop bugging you. ;)

WHERE DID THE SCANTRON LINK GO?
There have been some changes in the way you find Scantron link, compared to last year. As you have noticed, the Scantron is now added to your courses. So that’s where you can access the Scantron quick link, through your courses in OLS. There are 2 lessons in the Scantron course. As you go through them, it tells you what it is all about. Then in lesson 2 there are some videos to watch. Also, that’s where you can click on the Scantron link, in lesson 2. Click on Scantron Performance Series.
It will take you to www.edperformance.com
That’s Scantron website. From there you will come to Scantron log in page. Click Student Log in and follow the log in I provided for you in my Kmail about Scantron called “Scantron Overview". It's the same as last year.

Labs, Study Halls, and classes....where to go?!
You will notice that on your daily plan, you have your content classes, a study hall, and sometimes a lab ALL scheduled at once. Here is the good news. You don't have to be in three places at once. The labs and study halls are very optional. They are such a great resource to use if you need help with something or just need to ask a quick content question. Also, please check with your subject teacher what class connects they want you to go to . Also check each teacher's website and read their Beginning of the year Kmail for all the important information. If you are assigned to a Small group class, then you most likely need to go there.
